Coatesville Bids Farewell to Legendary Teacher and Coach, Ross Kershey

Ross Kershey was a beloved member of the Coatesville community.

Ross Kershey, legendary Coatesville High School teacher, boys basketball boys track coach, and a true Coatesville icon, died on Nov. 16 aged 90, writes Peter DiGiovanni for The Daily Local News

“My dad was in a good place when he passed,” said his son, Scott. 

Kershey, a West Virginia native, moved to Pennsylvania when he was two. After graduating from Temple University in 1956, he came to Coatesville. He was married to his wife Sally, who passed away in 2016, for 62 years. 

Kershey taught American History at Coatesville for more than four decades before he decided to retire in 1998. During his time as the basketball coach, he won one District 1 championship and was a four-time runner-up. Among the players he coached was NBA star and Hall of Famer Richard “Rip” Hamilton

His record was 455-125 in basketball, and he compiled an astonishing 104-1 mark in track. 

After he retired from teaching at Coatesville, he taught at Widener and Immaculata

Kershey is a nine-time hall of famer, including being inducted into Chester County Hall of Fame. He was also named Educator of the Year in 1981.
