The twin foals who surprised Cara Klothe, a Grand Prix dressage rider and breeder in Lehigh Valley, spent the first ten days of their lives growing stronger at University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, writes Hannah Sherk for The Chronicle of the Horse.
Klothe was diligent in ensuring that the pregnancy of her mare, Lhegally Blonde, went according to plan. She scheduled regular ultrasounds and sent her to a foaling barn for delivery. But something unexpected happened when she received a call on June 14: and was told that her mare had foaled not one, but two babies.
“I went back to my messages and my phone calls like six times when I woke up,” said Klothe. “I was like, ‘I don’t think this is real life.’”
Since a twin birth is dangerous even in normal circumstances for a horse, and this was the mare’s first delivery, it was a delight to know that all three had survived.
The foals, named Elle and Emmett, were then sent to the NICU at the New Bolton Center where they received round-the-clock care for their first ten days.
