Three Ways to Stop Drama in the Workplace
No one wants to work in a dramatic environment, yet it’s surprisingly common. Drama addiction is a common affliction. A person with this phenomenon might exhibit gossip, extreme reactions and poor stress management, writes Marcel Schwantes for Inc.
Here are ways to eliminate drama in the workplace, according to psychologist Scott Lyons.
Understand the Source
The terminology drama addiction refers to people who thrive on chaos and conflict to distract themselves from discomfort or anxiety. It could also stem from childhood and growing up in a chaotic environment.
Interrupt the Drama Cycle
Lyons refers to the first phase of the drama cycle as revving, which forms conditions for drama. The second is dysregulated activation, which refers to the flooding of stress hormones to make the person feel powerful.
Then comes unregulated catharsis, and finally hangover, which results in boredom and regret.
If your co-worker is in the revving stage, calm them down with breathing exercises or other distractions.
Encourage Healthy Coping Methods
Bored or stressed workers might turn toward drama to give them energy. A better way to combat with uneasy feelings is to encourage wellness activities such as yoga.
