Downingtown West High School graduate Zack Steffen, a professional soccer player, is a goalkeeper for Middlesbrough F.C. (on loan from Manchester City of the English Premier League) and the United States Men’s National Team. He is also the founder of the VoyceNow Foundation, a nonprofit with a mission to build a global community of athletes dedicated to speaking up on current social issues, educating the next generation on racial equality, and inspiring communities of color.

“My teammates are what I love most about my job,” said Steffen. “You get to meet so many new people from all over the world. The bonds that you’re able to create if you put in the work is immeasurable.”

Steffen played two seasons on the college level at the University of Maryland — where he led the Terrapins to the national championship game as a freshman in 2013 — before turning pro. He first credits God with having the biggest impact on his career, then his goalkeeping mentor, Dave Papalia.

“Without God, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Steffen. “After him, Dave first taught me the art of goalkeeping. He’s been with me the entire way and has been a lifelong friend.”

Steffen’s proudest professional achievement was winning the English Premier League, which is considered the best soccer league in the world, in back-to-back seasons (2021 and 2022) with Manchester City.

His favorite Chester County restaurant is Lione’s Pizza in Downingtown.

“Amazing food and customer service,” he said. “Travis Castiglione, the owner, is a good friend. He’s a great family person, and that’s important to me.”

Steffen and the rest of the 2023 Class of VISTA Millennial Superstars will be honored at the Awards Reception & Celebration on Thursday, May 18 at Penn State Great Valley.
