While keeping score at the ballpark using pencil and paper is not often seen anymore, some fans still consider it to be a key part of the baseball experience, and Will Shipley, a Malvern resident, is among them, writes Dave Caldwell for the Philadelphia Inquirer

He has started bringing his young son, Liam, to baseball games recently, and he makes sure to bring a scorecard with him primarily as a souvenir.

For Shipley, keeping score is “a lost art, in a sense.”

In the future, he plans to introduce his son to the version of the system that has been used for decades. On the paper, players’ positions in the field are labeled from 1 to 9, with little diamonds drawn in the center of every square in the scorecards to mark the progress a baserunner has made. The squares are filled in for a run scored.

“I’ll teach him how to do it,” said Shipley. “I did it growing up, but I haven’t done it in a while. He’s just getting into baseball right now.”
