The Ohio State women's ice hockey team celebrates the first national championship in program history.

Phoenixville native Hadley Hartmetz recently led the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team to its first national championship, writes Giana Han for The Philadelphia Inquirer

With friends and family among the spectators, Hartmetz played in the Frozen Four of the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament at Penn State and keyed the Buckeyes’ 3-2 win over Minnesota Duluth.

“When I was a little kid, I dreamed of winning a national championship, so to do it at home was amazing,” said Hartmetz, a junior who transferred to Ohio State after playing two years at Boston College. “I hope it continues to help (women’s hockey) grow.”

Hartmetz, who attended Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a prep school in Faribault, Minn., fell in love with hockey as a kid. She played mostly on boys’ teams and attended Flyers games. Her ultimate goal is to participate in the Olympics.

And while making hockey a full-time career is still not feasible, she is hoping better opportunities will soon arise.

“It would be awesome, not only for little girls to be able to see a women’s team, but just for me, like that would be something I’d want to do,” Hartmetz said.
