Guided by Veteran Coach, West Chester Rustin a Force on Scholastic Ice Hockey Scene

West Chester Rustin's ice hockey team won the national championship in 2016-17.

Veteran coach Nick Russo has helped turn West Chester Rustin into a force on the scholastic ice hockey scene, writes Mike Owens for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

In 12 years under Russo, the Golden Knights have captured seven Flyers Cup championships, five state titles, and last year’s national championship.

“Obviously, to have such success in a short period of time is a compliment to the players and families involved,” said Russo.

Last season’s national title capped what was already a magical year for Rustin. The Golden Knights won their fourth consecutive Flyers Cup and fourth straight state championship before being crowned national champions. Russo was also named USA Hockey Atlantic District Coach of the Year.

Rustin is only the second team from Pennsylvania to win the national championship, after Bethel Park secured it four years ago.
