Wayne couple Yiran and Keating Sherry recently welcomed their second child into the world in a somewhat unexpected way: Maeve Lily was born in their car while they were trying to reach the hospital, writes Anndee Hochman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Yiran started having contractions in the middle of the night, a timing that matched the birth of son Rafa Evan Daniel.

Knowing that delivery could be multiple hours away, she arose the next morning and continued her daily routine.

When Keating was ready to take Rafa to preschool, things changed rapidly.

“I put him in the backseat and went to check on Yiran,” said Keating. “Her water had broken a few seconds prior.”

Yiran helped his wife into their Tesla and started toward Paoli Hospital through heavy traffic. The drive from Wayne took only 20 minutes but felt longer, especially as Yiran’s contractions were one minute apart.

Just as they pulled up to the hospital, Yiran whispered, “Oh, my God, Keating. She’s out.”

Luckily, a pediatrician was standing outside the hospital doors. He summoned nurses who cut the umbilical cord while he examined the baby.

“Once the pediatrician said, ‘She’s healthy. Congratulations,’ that was quite the sigh of relief,” said Keating.

The hospital staff affectionately referred to Maeve Lily as “the Tesla baby” while wishing the couple well.
