SET GOALS! Goal setting is the essential formula for success and achievement.

My assistant has been teaching her children from home for the past two weeks because they were in close contact with someone at school who tested positive for Covid-19.

She is doing homework with her first grader and one of the videos in the lesson for the day was about goal setting: How to Set Goals – 4 Easy Steps by Rocket Kids. My assistant was ecstatic! Why? Because her daughter who is in first grade is being taught a life-changing (and saving) concept that many adults have yet to learn.

In this video, a young girl teaches her peers how to set goals. The four steps she mentions are some of the same steps I go over with my clients:

  1. Set a BIG goal (What do you want? What is your dream?)
  2. Define WHY you want to achieve that goal.
  3. Set smaller goals (objectives) to help you reach your goal. The video mentions here that you should ask yourself the following questions: Who can help? What do I need to do? And when do I need to do it? These kids are so SMART! (As in S.M.A.R.T. Goals!)
  4. Identify obstacles and plan for them.

WOW! Just WOW! I am so glad they are teaching kids this now because I certainly was not taught this when I was six years old. Honestly, most people who are taught it, don’t even use the information they have learned & that’s usually where I come in.

The sad reality is everybody talks about goals but very few people rarely take the time to write those goals down and create a plan to achieve them.

Maybe you think goal setting is a waste of time. Maybe you think that you know what you are doing, and you don’t need to formally set goals to achieve what you want. How is that going?

All those goals sitting there in your head must compete with all the garbage and noise going on around you. If you write your goals down and post them someplace where you can see them every day, they will no longer be just another thing to think about or try to remember.

Do you ever have so many tabs open in your browser that you can’t find the one you are looking for? That’s your brain when you don’t take the time to write things down.

Once you have taken the time to get clear on what you want (Secret #1), you need to set goals to achieve what you want! If you don’t set goals, you’re not only missing out on achieving what you want, but you are working on everyone else’s goals plan.

If you ever feel like you do things all day long but you never feel like you got anything done, you may be living on someone else’s goals program.

People who set goals and create plans to achieve them know what they need to focus their time and energy on (eventually). Setting goals allows you to focus on what really matters most to YOU and simplify, eliminate, delegate, or outsource (S.E.D.O.) the rest.

I am so grateful that schools are teaching children in elementary about the fundamentals and importance of goals setting. My prayer is that these children absorb this information like a sponge and use it to their every advantage.

We all have the potential to succeed – achieve all that we want and more, but we must know what we want first, and we must plan out how we are going to get there.

As for my assistant’s daughter, she wants to bake for one day every week and then sell the goods to make money and donate the money to people who are homeless. She said she would also give them some baked goods!

I hope her passion to serve others never leaves her. And I hope that my assistant enjoys adding this charitable endeavor to her goals program.
