West Grove native Rachel DuVall is a Los Angeles-based textile artist who creates finely detailed fiber works that explore the grid structure inherent to weaving, writes Ryan Waddoups for Surface magazine.

“I make handwoven artworks using linen and natural dyes for my color palette,” said DuVall. “They are abstract geometric works that highlight the subtle variation of the woven cloth in tension with their gridded structure and composition.”

One of her favorite series is the one she has been working on recently. In it, she explores something new by combining painting with weaving.

“I’m really excited about recent works I’ve made exploring this and keen to see where it takes me in the future,” she said.

Her goal is to create artwork that evokes a calm space for the viewer, where they can slow down and be drawn in.

She achieves this by “repeating elements and variation in the woven cloth, similar to the meditative process that goes into creating the works built up line by line on the loom.”

DuVall’s solo exhibition “Madder + Marigold” is currently on display at Alison Milne in Toronto.
