With no textbook available on the unprecedented circumstances of the 2020-21 academic year, West Chester University’s athletic trainers in charge of pandemic protocols had to learn on the fly, writes Mike Jensen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The university first announced there would be no sports for the entire academic year. Eventually, that stance evolved to allow spring sports. The authorized play, however, put intense pressure on the staff overseeing protocols.

“I felt such pressure to do the right things,” said Katie Morrison, a WCU athletic trainer and full professor of sports medicine. “There was so much unknown.”

It did not help that the guidelines from the NCAA, state, and county changed constantly. But thanks to a lot of diligence and strictly following safety protocols, things worked out.

“Katie Morrison, she was really the architect behind this,” said John Smith, another WCU athletic trainer. “She touched every single component of this return.”
