After returning stronger than ever following a sheriff’s sale in 2013, the Coatesville Country Club is now celebrating its 100th anniversary with 290 members, writes Fran Maye for the Daily Local News.

The club first opened in 1921 as a nine-hole golf course. Another nine holes were added the following year. Founding members came from Lukens Steel, Parkesburg Iron, and The Coatesville Record newspaper.

The club has made significant strides since it opened, when women did not have full playing privileges and golfing was not allowed on Sundays before 1 PM. Decades later, its dedicated members helped it back on its feet after the sheriff’s sale, when they purchased the remaining debt.

“The club has changed over the years, but has always been a family club,” said Chip Breuninger, a third-generation member.

Today, the course is in great condition. The club features a new clubhouse that, among other amenities, boasts a pool that was added in 1956 and remains a center of family activity in the summer months.

“The pool was a huge part of our lives,” said member Judie Brown. “I can’t say enough positive for how it changed our lives.”
