Professionals at golf clubs and associations in the region are working on boosting youth participation in the sport, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.

There’s a lot to overcome to push golf to the top of the list for the next generation, according to Scott Nye, Merion Golf Club’s pro since 2000.

“Look at AAU basketball programs, lacrosse camps, and even sports like ultimate Frisbee have summer leagues,” he said. “Between electronics and all of those things, finding time for a junior to go out and play for fun is tough.”

Clubs and associations are therefore increasing youth and family programs and expanding competitive opportunities.

Atglen’s Moccasin Run now hosts summer evenings during which families can play five or nine holes for a low rate. Other clubs are offering 50 percent discounts for players 18 or younger or unveiling new layouts designed to make golf more enjoyable for people of all ages and skill levels.

“Youth participation has grown exponentially,” said Leila Mackie, the Philadelphia PGA’s player development director. “When I started in 2013, there were zero teams in the junior league. The amount of teams has doubled every year since.”
