Well-Traveled Downingtown Native Defies a Basketball Stereotype, Makes College Commitment

By

John Camden

Downingtown native John Camden, a 6-foot-8 small forward and three-star prospect in the Class of 2021, has committed to play basketball at the University of Memphis, writes Jason Munz for The Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The nation’s 126th-ranked recruit, according to 247Sports.com, Camden will play at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire this season. He previously played at the Westtown School and Archbishop Carroll.

Camden is an elite-level shooter, but one who likes to defy expectations on the court.

“Whenever the white kid steps on the court, whether it’s in Philadelphia or anywhere else, it’s always, ‘He’s the shooter. He’s the shooter,’” said Camden, whose older sister, Anna Camden, plays at Penn State. “A lot of times, that’s fully the case. For me, that’s not something I’m confined to. I play like more than a shooter. I can handle the ball. I have a unique passing ability for my position that a lot of other players in my class do not have.”

Not being confined to a certain identity is one of the main reasons he chose Memphis. Although the team wanted a shooter, “they also know I can handle the ball and do a lot of other things.”

Memphis is coached by former NBA star Penny Hardaway.
