It was seven years in the making, but the West Chester University field hockey team sits atop the NCAA Division II landscape once again.

Marre Corver and Katie Thompson each scored early, then the Golden Rams turned to their defense to bring home the program’s seventh national title – and first since 2012 – with a 2-1 victory over Saint Anselm at Chryst Field Sunday afternoon at Millersville University.

WCU (20-1) won back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012.

“This is our family. We call it a Ram-ily,” said Golden Rams coach Amy Cohen, who just completed her ninth year at the program’s helm. “They were willing to do whatever it took to get themselves a national championship.”

Corver tipped a shot from Kat Roncoroni past the Saint Anselm goalkeeper in the ninth minute to put WCU on top early. Thompson then doubled that lead with the eventual game-winner in the 12th minute on a reverse chip to the opposite side of the cage while falling to the ground.

“I didn’t see (the goal),” Thompson said. “I remember hitting it, and then turning my head away from the goal as I fell. I just saw that open lane, and knew I had to shoot.”
