Jalen Gaffney, a Westtown School graduate and soon-to-be freshman at the University of Connecticut, has been quick to adapt to his new basketball environment, writes Dom Amore for the Hartford Courant.

“He had a rough couple of days,” said A.D. Gaffney, Jalen’s father and AAU coach. “But he’s had days when he’s been as good as anybody the last two weeks, so he’s a fast learner.”

The 6-foot-2 combo guard from Columbus, N.J., caught basketball fever at a young age. As a toddler, he often followed his father, a basketball coach of more than 20 years, to practices. There, he would start copying the drills he saw.

But the young athlete truly came into his own once he began attending the Westtown School. Recruiters started knocking on his door, and out of the offers he received, he chose UConn.

He plans to introduce Huskies’ fans to “a guy that can score, facilitate, do a lot of everything.”

“Hopefully they’ll see a lot of me this year,” he said.
