Students in West Chester University’s Department of Theatre are working on an original, student-led presentation and will host two live virtual performances via Zoom on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 PM.

Performances are free with donations encouraged. Click here for tickets.

“Unmute Yourself,” directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Charlie Delmarcelle, explores the challenges, struggles, strategies, and peculiarities of trying to communicate and connect in an isolated, polarized world.

The production’s content, format, design, and delivery will be devised entirely by the student ensemble, who are all creating and collaborating remotely.

“’Unmute Yourself’ has been an artistic experiment for all of us,” said Delmarcelle. “In my 27 years of doing theatre, I’ve never built a show where the ensemble members haven’t set foot, not once, in a physical rehearsal room. I think every theatre in the country is trying to figure out how to continue doing what theatre does best – sharing stories with other humans in a communal space. Right now, it’s just great to see our students connecting and working again. They miss each other so much.”

The show is comprised of pre-recorded material that is interwoven and spliced with moments happening in real time and will also include interaction from the viewing audience. The Zoom live chat will be kept on throughout the performance, and a stage manager will respond to audience comments.

“Our hope is that ‘Unmute Yourself’ will be at times funny, absurd, and honest, and that it gives voice to students trying to communicate what it feels like to be human in 2020,” said Delmarcelle.
