Son of Downingtown Football Legend a Hot Commodity on the Recruiting Trail

Arlen Harris Jr.

With almost two dozen scholarship offers, Arlen Harris Jr., the son of Downingtown football legend Arlen Harris Sr., is a hot commodity on the recruiting trail and has narrowed down his list of potential colleges to six, writes David Eickholt for Hawkeye Insider.

The younger Harris is a junior running back at Lutheran High School of St. Charles County in Missouri. The elder Harris – a 1998 graduate of Downingtown High School who led the Whippets to a state football championship, the only one in Chester County history – played four seasons as a running back in the NFL. He’s also a member of the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame.

Harris Jr. has trimmed his list of schools down to Penn State, Iowa, Florida, Missouri, Stanford, and Michigan.

“Some key factors I’m looking at is relationships,” he said. “I don’t want to go to a place that’s just big on football, and the coaches aren’t even cool or nice, or I don’t have a mutual relationship with them. I want to be able to have a relationship not just on the football field, but off as well.”

Academics are a key factor, too.

“We all know that football won’t always be there,” said Harris Jr. “So, I want a place that I can be challenged both on the field and in the classroom.”
