Outdoor Dining – ‘One of the Coolest Things We’ve Done’ in Kennett Square – a Lifeline for Restaurants
Several restaurants in Kennett Square have been able to stay afloat during the pandemic thanks to the expanded outdoor dining that was made possible by the closure of a portion of State Street, writes Fran Maye for the Daily Local News.
The decision by Kennett Square officials to close part of State Street at Union Street from Thursday afternoons to Sunday afternoons has proven to be a success.
“All the feedback I got from restaurant owners and merchants is that it has been incredibly positive,” said Kennett Square Mayor Matt Fetick. “Restaurants said if they didn’t get that expanded seating, they would have lost their business. They really needed it.”
Patrons have welcomed the expanded dining area as well. Among them is former mayor Leon Spencer, who said he often visits local restaurants with his wife at the new outdoor dining setup.
“I think it’s one of the coolest things we have ever done,” said Spencer. “It has enough space where quite a few people took advantage of it.”
