50 Years After a Coin Flip Landed Him in Oxford, Barber Celebrates His ‘Meant to Be’ Shop
Bill Bilger is celebrating 50 years of providing good haircuts and friendly conversation at William Bilger Barber Shop in Oxford, writes Steven Hoffman for the Chester County Press.
When he first completed his training to become a licensed barber, Bilger and his wife found themselves with two opportunities to open a barbershop. The options were Wellsboro, near Pennsylvania’s northern border, or Oxford, near its southern border. Unable to decide between the two, Bilger flipped a coin and it landed in Oxford’s favor.
“I guess it was meant to be,” said the barber. “I’ve been happy here.”
During his half-century in Oxford, Bilger has earned an appropriate moniker from his customers.
“Bill the Barber – that’s what they call me,” he said.
He has built his business on two simple principles: to give each customer a good haircut and to treat every one of them with respect. So, whatever their station in life, customers are treated fairly and equally by Bill the Barber.
“When they come through the door, they are all the same to me,” he said. “They are all important in their own way, so I treat them all the same.”
