Tammy James, the Coordinator of Academic Support Services for Student Athletes at West Chester University, and Keith Cochran, the boys basketball coach at West Chester Rustin, are making a huge impact in helping local students-athletes achieve success, writes Neil Geoghegan for PA Prep Live.
The couple – fast approaching their 19th wedding anniversary – are working together to make a difference in the athletic and academic realm for students ranging from adolescent to adulthood.
“We are able to look at things from the teacher or professor’s perspective, and from the coach’s perspective,” said Cochran. “We share stories and ask advice of each other. But we are both advocates for the student-athlete.”
James, popular with both students and parents alike, has introduced several programs over the years to aid student-athletes at WCU achieve academic success.
This includes the Athletic Mentoring Program, which helps first-year and at-risk student-athletes who may require some additional academic support.
Meanwhile, at Rustin, Cochran often refers seniors to James for any questions they might have and helps them take steps to ensure they get into college.
