Pearl and Fritz Ruccius have made changes to their Malvern home of 17 years to accommodate a new, pandemic-influenced lifestyle, writes Paul Jablow for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

When they first bought their newly constructed Colonial, the two were working, kept an active social life, and traveled together. Landscaping and yard maintenance were delegated to people they hired.

Now, Fritz, who five years ago retired as senior vice president for development at Thomas Jefferson University, is the one who takes care of the grounds, starting at the crack of dawn.

“I pull every little weed I see, trim the bushes, and deadhead the flowers,” he said. “I’ve developed quite an eye for weeds.”

The couple also uses the swimming pool and basketball hoop more often, especially when the four grandchildren come to visit. They have turned the basement into a playroom that boasts an air hockey table and several other diversions.

“With nowhere to go and nothing to do,” said Pearl, “it’s an outlet for exercise and fun.”

Additionally, the house will soon become an academic outpost. Pearl, who used to teach elementary school, will be tutoring her grandson as his school plans to hold online classes this fall.
