General Store in East Fallowfield a Local Institution That Dates Back More Than 200 Years
Founded 202 years ago, Triple Fresh in East Fallowfield Township remains strong and continues to maintain its community ties, even during a pandemic, writes Jen Samuel for the Daily Local News.
The market’s owner and president, Jim Petro Jr., has emphasized that the well-being and safety of his staff and patrons always come first. He also ensures that every customer is treated like a neighbor.
One of the oldest, continuously operating food establishments in the country, the business originally opened in 1818 to serve the growing community, called Ercildoun Village, which served as a major hub for the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War.
The Petro family purchased it in 1987 and then rebranded it Triple Fresh.
In essence, the establishment is a general store that harkens back to those seen in classic Hollywood films. It now employs more than 50 people, the majority of whom have continued working throughout the pandemic.
To ensure everyone’s safety, the store closed for two hours each day from mid-March to early May for deep cleaning.
“I’ve never seen such panic before,” said Petro. “Just the look on people’s eyes, the actual fear. You wish there was something more you can do.”
