Coatesville resident Cameron Smith is blazing trails as the only Black rider in American Flat Track Racing, the professional motorcycle racing series previously known as the AMA Grand National Championship, writes Neil Geoghegan for the Daily Local News.

Smith, 21, has been racing for most of his life. Recently, he participated in the 2020 AFT Singles Class season, his sixth as a professional.

During his latest outing at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida, he placed sixth overall. Next, he will compete in a race in Indiana on Aug. 21 and 22.

And while he is still working toward his first victory as a professional, Smith is already a well-established personality in AFT. His several top-four finishes and numerous top-10 finishes are quite an accomplishment for an unattached racer.

“Like all riders, Cameron would like to be on a factory team, with a salary so he wouldn’t have to work but just train and ride,” said Smith’s father, Ben. “As a privateer, you have to work on the bikes daily, and there are expenses for parts and travel, but Cameron seems to make the best of his situation.”
