Coatesville native Terrance Laird, a sprinter at LSU, recently clocked in at 20.43 seconds in the 200 meters – the world’s fastest time this year for the indoor event – at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., according to a report from The Baton Rouge Advocate.

Laird, a graduate of Collegium Charter Schoool, transferred to LSU after stints at Penn State and Hinds Community College in Mississippi. His time in the 200 meters earned him SEC (Southeastern Conference) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors.

The achievement, incredibly, came at a time when he was dealing with some sickness. As a result, he believes he can do even better.

“I felt like I could execute a lot more,” said Laird. “I felt like I have a lot more in store.”

The runner has taken the leap from the JUCO ranks to one of the nation’s top track-and-field programs in stride but admits that it was a big change.

“It’s a step up,” he said. “Here, everybody is at the same level, so it’s just mental toughness. You got to come in and be mentally tough. We’re all talented; we all know we can be the best.”
