While a pandemic might not be the time when many people would prioritize anything other than essentials to keep their institutions afloat, advocacy should always remain high on the list of things they are focusing on, writes Allison Titman for the American Alliance of Museums.

Titman, Executive Director of the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center in West Chester, says ensuring that federal, state, and local legislators always know about the important role an organization plays in the community does not have to be a big commitment in time, energy, or resources. However, even a light advocacy effort can pay dividends for an organization in the long term.

Since taking over as Executive Director of the museum, Titman’s work with U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan and State Sen. Tom Killion has resulted in successfully securing grants for the organization.

“Your legislators are a resource for funding, for building awareness, and for influencing decisions that affect how and how well your museum can do its work,” wrote Titman.
