Unionville native Leslie Young – the trainer of Andi’amu, the National Steeplechase Association’s 2019 timber champion – has been in love with horses since early childhood, when both of her parents were fox hunters, writes Eileen Smith Dallabrida for Main Line Today.

As a high school student, she stayed involved with horses by working weekends for trainer Jack Fisher. After earning her degree at Lynchburg College, she worked as a vet tech at Gulf Stream and Saratoga racetracks.

Soon, though, she realized she wanted to be in the thick of racing again. So, she returned to Chester County to work with Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard.

“I took my $250,000 education and I went back to galloping racehorses, which did not thrill my parents,” said Young.

She got her license and, soon after, watched More Fascination become her first winner at Saratoga.

She then married five-time national champion, Paddy Young, and the two became partners in life and business. And Andi’amu, owned by Tom and Roxy Collins, has also been everything they hoped he would be.

“We got him for $25,000, door to door, and he’s earned more than $300,000,” said Young.
