Mama Wong in Exton and Verbena BYOB in Kennett Square were among the Philadelphia-area eateries that delighted diners with their offerings in 2019, writes Craig LaBan for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Mama Wong earned praise thanks to its delicious and authentic Chinese cooking from the Szechuan region. The eatery was built by a pharma tycoon to remind his Chinese employees of home.

The result is one of the best examples of regional Chinese cooking in the Philadelphia area. The food, prepared by a former Han Dynasty chef, features a mixture of Szechuan heat, Shanghai soup dumplings, Cantonese seafood, and Nanjing flavors.

Thanks to its delicious food and personable and outgoing staff, Mama Wong attracts a diverse crowd and was one of the best new restaurants in the suburbs in 2019.

Meanwhile, Verbena BYOB enthralls diners with its creative combinations of local ingredients tweaked with contemporary techniques. These include olive “paper,” Parmesan foam, and a pillar of chicken stuffed with mushrooms.

Owned by Chef Scott Morozin, the eatery offers warm service and exceptional flavors.
