The Chester County Community Revitalization Program has helped West Chester thrive as a destination town with several behind-the-scenes infrastructure projects, writes Michael Rellahan for the Daily Local News.

For this year, the county has approved $2.5 million in grants for the borough through the program. This includes a $400,000 grant to implement streetscape improvements on South High Street, including crosswalks, upgraded lighting, curb-bump-outs, and bus shelters.

The borough also submitted a grant application to make the pedestrian crossings close to West Chester University safer for both pedestrians and motorists.

“This area of town is one of the most traveled entries into the downtown,” said Malcolm Johnstone, executive director of the West Chester Business Improvement District. “It’s an entryway that welcomes visitors to West Chester in a way that you really can’t replicate in any other way.”

The grant will build off the work recently done by PennDOT in that part of town.

West Chester will also receive a Chester County Vision Partnership Program grant of $22,500 for a High Street Corridor Study. This will provide key direction for the PennDOT project on High Street and any future revitalization applications and redevelopment projects.
