In recognition of September being National Hunger Action Month, more than 40 Chester County dignitaries and community members visited their local ShopRite to pack groceries for a day, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.
The initiative was a part of ShopRite Partners in Caring’s “Help Bag Hunger Day.” Among the eager participants were Mark Yoder, President of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, and Matt Holliday, Chester County Prothonotary and chamber board member.
Both noted that packing eggs was the trickiest part.
“Stack two cartons on top in a double bag,” said Holliday. “And place the bag up top in the cart where the purses go.”
County commissioners, row officers, Chester County Health Department staffers, and Omega Psi Phi fraternity members were also there to help fill grocery bags.
ShopRite hosts the event at a number of its stores across several states each year, and it also donates food to feed the hungry throughout the year.
The West Chester store donates to Philabundance, with the proceeds going to Safe Harbor, Lord’s Pantry, Gaudenzia’s Warehouse, and the West Chester Food Cupboard.
