The Wayne Church’s food pantry is helping low-income people living in the area of Pennsylvania’s richest county stay nourished, writes Alfred Lubrano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The food pantry has been in operation for around two decades. It distributes roughly 15 tons of food each year, collected from local food drives and donations from the church’s congregation, area businesses, and local organizations.

And the need for its services is always there, despite its very upscale surroundings.

“People may be in a nicer setting, but when it comes to the individual in need, it’s the same struggle as in North Philadelphia,” said Pastor Tom Ebersole.

Ebersole said that there are 80 units of public housing on Highland Avenue, just two blocks from the church, also known as Wayne United Methodist. Many of the residents who live there receive help from the food pantry.

Also, a lot of senior citizens, who have retired and struggle to live off their pension and Social Security, visit the pantry.

“They really need our help,” said pantry volunteer Bob King, a former engineer and executive at Sunoco.
