Kemblesville United Methodist Church is trying to find a path forward as its financial difficulties continue to mount, writes John Chambless for the Chester County Press.

During a recent meeting of the Franklin Township Board of Supervisors, Tom Veasey and Dan Mahala estimated the church could only survive for two more months before it would be forced to close.

“The Kemblesville Church is in great financial difficulty here,” said Veasey.

The financial troubles stemmed from a decision of the church’s previous pastor, Dave Bergstrom, to expand the church in 2008. At the time, there were plans to add a sizable community of homes behind the church. However, the homes never materialized.

Today, the debt from that investment stands at $425,000.

The church faced further issues when it was forced to let go of Bergstrom, and half of the congregation decided to go with him.

The church is now trying to move forward. Veasey detailed several proposals for the possible use of the building during the meeting, including turning it into low-income housing for veterans or seniors, with a small space set aside for worship.
