Lacrosse star Madison Doucette, a Unionville High School graduate, underwent a heart procedure after postponing surgery several times to win a championship and ensure her place on the U-19 national team, writes Megan Miller for U.S. Lacrosse Magazine.

Doucette had a hole between her left and right atriums, a fairly common defect that usually heals naturally after birth. However, sometimes surgery is necessary.

The goalie first postponed her procedure at the end of her senior year at Unionville, after the Indians beat Garnet Valley in the state semifinals to advance to the championship game against Manheim Township. With Doucette’s help, Unionville won the title.

Then, nine weeks later, Doucette set out to qualify for Team USA and had to move her procedure again to accommodate the tryouts.

Once she made the 36-player training team, she could lie down on the operating table and was playing again within two weeks.

Doucette now competes for Northwestern University.
