Ananya Muthukrishnan, a student at Henderson High School, was not sure what she wanted to study in college until she participated in the Girls Advisory Board, the youth grantmaking program of the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls, writes William Bleier for Generocity.

Muthukrishnan, a senior who will major in political science at Penn, is one of 20 young women from the Greater Philadelphia area approving grants to organizations based on an annual theme.

“I think it opened my eyes to the bigger problems that we had in our community,” said Muthukrishnan.

The program lasts two years. In their first year, participants discuss, evaluate, and award grants to various organizations in the community. In the second year, they mentor their younger counterparts.

Now, Muthukrishnan wants to either go to law school or run for public office after college. Also, after volunteering in her community, she feels more confident speaking out on social issues and keeps in touch with many of the girls she met at GAB.
