Professional fisherman Mike Iaconelli recently took on Philadelphia’s storm drains, using local food favorites as bait, writes Stephanie Farr for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Iaconelli’s new show, Fish My City, recently started airing on National Geographic Wild Channel. But he did not have cameras following him earlier this month, when he sat on a bucket at a curb for several hours and fished using soft pretzels as bait.

“There’s a thing in fishing called ‘match the hatch,’” said Iaconelli. “When you’re doing this, you’ve got to think of what these fish are seeing. I’m using soft pretzels, and hot dogs are really good too.”

But the bait did not help much, as he only had three bites and reeled in just one small catfish. However, he did end up hooking amused passersby, who stopped to ask things like why he was fishing there and did he eat his catch. The answer to both was no.

A lot of them also asked for a picture with Iaconelli, who happily obliged.

“I enjoy making people’s day,” said Iaconelli. “They get to see something they don’t normally see, and I enjoy making people aware that there’s fishing opportunities in the city.”
