Before West Chester native Alex Kulick joined Horrendous, the heavy metal band based in Philadelphia had been playing without a bassist for years, writes Ryan Reed for Revolver magazine.

Kulick, who also works as a Visitor Services Supervisor at the Penn Museum, joined the party when he met band vocalist and guitarist Matt Knox for the first time.

“Matt and I met in a coffee shop randomly two or three years ago,” said Kulick.

He joined the band, which also includes drummer Jamie Knox and guitarist and vocalist Damien Herring. Herring emphasized the progressive elements in the band’s music, evident in its soon-to-be fourth LP, Idol.

“Believe it or not, the progressive element exists in us in different ways, but I’ve gotten my education in progressive rock from Matt and Jamie over the last couple years,” said Kulick.

While he has played bass in a number of other bands, Horrendous is the first time his performances are front and center.

“I’ve played bass my whole life in the back corner but never as a dedicated thing, but now it’s become a huge part of my life,” he said.
