A common theme when trying to shed weight is to stop snacking. But snacking, when done correctly, is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and can assist with health goals.
I was told once to snack every three to four hours and this is the method I live by today. Food is fuel. And when used properly food keeps the metabolism fired up and burning fat. Snacking can help you manage your appetite and keep cravings under control. Although all snacks are not created equal. Here are my tips when it comes to snacking.
- Listen to your body. Are you hungry or are you thirsty? Make sure you consume at least 1/2 of your body weight in water ounces per day. Hydration is key.
- Balance out your snack just as you would a meal. Combining fiber with protein and a bit of good fat is a great way to stay full longer.
- Plan. Maybe it is because I am a mom but I always have snacks with me wherever I go. If not, the soft pretzels at WaWa would be calling my name.
My go-to snacks are hard boiled eggs, raw veggies with hummus, an apple with nut butter, air-popped popcorn, plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit or a small portion of leftovers.
How do you snack smart? I would love to hear from you.
