Philadelphia’s only building trades union with an African-American majority – the Laborers’ District Council – is planning to move its training facility from Exton to North Philadelphia, writes Jake Blumgart for PlanPhilly.

During a community meeting held last week, union officials presented renderings of its planned facility that will be built on a piece of Temple University land. The 36,000-square-foot facility will cost $25 million to construct.

The union plans to move most of its operations to the city, but around 20 percent will remain in its current location in Exton due to space constraints at the proposed site.

Ryan Boyer, the union’s business manager, said the Laborers’ District Council has a “mission to bring African-American men and women into the construction industry, not just as laborers but also for the building trades.”
