The life we live today – whether it be a good life, bad life, or somewhere in between – is based on the results that we are getting at this time. And our results are a direct reflection of our self-image.

Now think a moment. Why do we get the results that we’re getting today? Isn’t it because of our behavior or the way we act? Don’t good actions produce good results, while bad actions yield bad results? Another word for action is habits.

So if we want to improve the results we are receiving from life, then we must improve our actions. The most powerful way to shape our lives is to get ourselves to take action.

What then determines our actions? Why do people act as they do? We take actions based on the way we think, right? We take actions based on our belief system. What a person does is the outcome of what that individual thinks and feels.

Psychologists tell us that thought, either conscious or subconscious, always precedes actions. Most mistakes of action are first mistakes of thinking. The decisions we are making on a daily basis will shape the events in our lives for years to come. How we think is how we do. Thoughts have energy – whatever you focus on grows larger. Thoughts are the forerunner of every action. Our actions reflect our thoughts and feelings. All human development is determined first and foremost by one’s thinking. We make decisions about who we are, what we believe, and what we are capable of in our life. These decisions direct our actions and mold our behavior, the final product of which is the circumstances and conditions in which we find ourselves.

Our thoughts determine what we are and what we will be throughout the future. Throughout history, all great thinkers, all great achievers affirm the fact that we actually are the manifestation of our thoughts. A person’s life is the direct result of their thoughts.

The Bible says: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” As you believe, so shall you receive.

So, the next step is to ask: What determines the way we think? We think the way we do because of conditioning by family and society. Our basic habits of thought and attitudes are formed early in childhood in an environment over which we have little or no control. Yet we retain these attitudes, virtually unchanged, throughout our adult lives. The decisions we make give rise to patterns in our lives, the situations and circumstances that tend to recur because we habitually handle them in the same way.

Luckily, we have the power to change our thinking.

If you grew up surrounded by positive people, you will have a generally positive outlook on life, and the results you receive are most likely to be positive as well. But if people grow up in a negative environment, they are likely to be fearful, have low self-concepts, and will live far below their potential.

Our concept is a liberator. We believe that no one has to be a victim of the past. We know that if you change the ideas you read, see, and hear every day, it will begin to change the way you think. As your thinking changes, the way you act will change. Your behavior will become more positive and productive as your thinking becomes more positive and productive. And when that happens, the results you get from life will become more positive and productive.

People want to change their results; people want to do better. We have to start with new ideas if we want to think differently. If we think differently we’ll have a more positive attitude, we’ll take different actions and bring about more of the results we want in life.

Next week, I will discuss the power of focus in a world driven to distraction.
