CEO of Devon-Based Surrey Discusses Growing Problem of Social Isolation Among Seniors

By

Bob Madonna, the President and CEO of Surrey Services for Seniors, recently discussed with Comcast Newsmakers the growing problem of social isolation among seniors, which can lead to psychological and physical issues.

“People don’t realize how many people are isolated,” Madonna said, referring to the fact that one-third of Americans 65 or older live alone. “What ends up happening is that the longer you’re isolated, the more chances you have of early death.

“The good news is that organizations like ours make a really big difference in trying to have older people as independent as possible and to get out and do things.”

Surrey, a Devon-based nonprofit, boasts a number of services to help in that regard.

“We use the term holistic approach,” said Madonna. “What we’re trying to do is help older adults and their families. Pick up a phone, call us, tell us your problem. In most cases, we have the services.”

From transportation for grocery shopping, medical appointments, or entertainment purposes to meal programs, tax preparation, finance management, and more, Surrey is on a mission to help older adults remain as engaged members of the community.
