The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is terminating its affiliation with CrossFit after its CEO’s tweets about the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.

“We are appalled by the brutal and inhumane treatment that George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless black individuals have endured,” reads a statement from the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. “The right to live without discrimination and fear of harassment is a basic human right that everyone deserves. No one should fear for their life or safety because of the color of their skin.

“We are also disturbed by the recent words of CrossFit’s CEO, Greg Glassman. Two years ago, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine opened East Chestnut CrossFit in its Oscar Lasko YMCA. In light of Mr. Glassman’s recent statements, we are terminating our affiliation with CrossFit, as we will not associate with any organization that does not stand for equality, justice, and human dignity. We will work with our members to select a new name, while continuing to offer unlimited small group training for adults and expanding offerings to teens and pre-teens.”

Reebok and several gyms are also reportedly ending their affiliation with CrossFit, a branded fitness regimen that has become popular in the 21st century.
