Philadelphia International Airport has unveiled its new Short Story Dispenser, which was installed in collaboration with the Free Library of Philadelphia, writes Zoe Bean for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The new kiosk between Terminals D and E has three buttons that offer one-, three-, or five-minute stories for free. After users select a story, it’s printed out on a glossy, receipt-like scroll. And while a specific story or genre cannot be chosen, there is no limit on the number of stories that can be selected.

The dispenser is part of a Public Library Association project named Fostering Creative Community Connections and financed by the Knight Foundation. The stories are from the publisher Short Édition. The goal is to provide people with somewhere to download some of the library’s free volumes.

The kiosk was officially unveiled last week, but has been operational since the start of July. It quickly became a hit, providing more than 1,500 stories during the first month.

According to Siobhan Reardon, director of the Free Library, the dispenser is for customers who “just want to sit and be quiet and have something to read.”
