The folks at Vintage Speedsters in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., understand that not everyone has $500,000 or more to spend on a Porsche 356 Speedster.

Made in the late 1950s and early 1960s, these cars are the very definition of rare and usually never hit the market.

So Vintage Speedsters create tribute cars for purchase at a fraction of the cost of the originals. They look the same. Drive the same. Sound the same. Even smell the same.

Powered by a Volkswagen and built on the chassis of a 1977 Volkswagen Beetle, the car is a close relative of the original, and very retro German in design as well. Consisting of many custom parts, Volkswagen parts, and some original Porsche parts, the car is alive with all the character and soul of the real thing.

I custom-ordered mine from hundreds of possible configurations in February 2017 and took delivery here at my office – it was shipped nationwide in a car carrier – in June 2017.

Since then, the car has traveled about 2,000 miles around Chester County, and I am loving every minute of it.

The exterior color is a Porsche original color named Bali Blue that’s very cool and very rare. The interior, meanwhile, is a camel-brown leather with tan carpets and authentic steering wheel, dash items, and custom floor mats that match the exterior.

The car has no radio, no power steering, and no top or windows. It’s a true “sunny day” car that has 92 horsepower and four-speed, manual transmission. As such, it’s extremely affordable to insure, much less expensive than if it were the original.

Much to my delight, this tribute car offers me the unique experience of driving a Porsche 356 Speedster, as well as the ability to insure it at a fraction of what it would cost to insure the original.
