If there’s one thing about the Mid-Atlantic states, it’s that criterium racing thrives in the region. Some of the greatest examples of the genre have taken place there over the years.
So, it’s not surprising that there will be three full-throttled criteriums in the region this year as part of the 11-race USA CRITS Championship Series:
- Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic in New York City on June 15
- Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic in West Chester on Aug. 11
- The Resurgence in Atlantic City, N.J., on Sept. 15
Maybe it’s the speed, the rush of the wind, and the whirl of wheels. Maybe it’s the boisterous announcers, the intense music, and the beer. Maybe it’s the ringing of cow bells, the yelling of fans, and the partying. Maybe it’s the crashes, the sprints, and the visceral magic of bike racing. Maybe it’s because it’s so American.

Whatever it is, it’s real, it’s crazy, and it’s the most unadulterated form of speed cycling known to humankind. Thousands of spectators throughout the Philadelphia-New York metroplex will be geared up for this unique form of American-style bike racing.
Having been part of the USA CRITS series since its inception in 2006, the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic is one of the original criteriums in the series.
Sponsored by the Benchmark Federal Credit Union, the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic is the last Mid-Atlantic Race before the finals. As one of the USA CRITS founding five races, the West Chester event enters its 13th season as one of the most popular events on the calendar among professional men and women riders, thanks to the challenging course, adoring fans, and charming historic setting.
“With its tree-lined streets, quaint shops, and great restaurants, West Chester makes for a great weekend day trip any time of the year,” said Mark Yoder, President of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic. “But when the hundreds of top riders are here ready to race, the excitement is non-stop!”
