The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) have announced its 2018 Hall of Fame class, and it includes Dr. Ed Matejkovic, West Chester University’s former athletics director.
Matejkovic is a Coatesville native who graduated from Bishop Shanahan High School. He is the longest-tenured athletics director in WCU history, having served in the position for 22 years.
During Matejkovic’s reign, WCU’s programs won the Eugene F. Dixon Trophy – given to the top overall athletics program in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference – three times, and earned six national championships, 24 NCAA regional crowns, and an astounding 63 PSAC titles.

However, Matejkovic’s more than two decades at WCU will also be remembered for student-athlete success in the classroom. WCU’s student-athletes consistently posted a cumulative GPA higher than that of the entire student body.
Matejkovic, who retired in 2017 after spending 47 years in education, also led a movement to upgrade WCU’s facilities.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from WCU in 1969, his master’s degree from WCU in 1975, and doctoral degree from Temple in 1983.
“I have spent a large part of my life here, both as a student and an employee, and I love this place,” Matejkovic said when he announced his retirement. “It has come to define who I am. It is, in my view, the best job in America.”
