J.D. Eckman, a bridge and highway construction company based in Atglen, is the lowest bidder (at $104.7 million) for a PennDOT project to widen and rebuild Interstate 83 east of Harrisburg, writes Jason Scott for the Central Penn Business Journal.

PennDOT received five bids, the highest of which was $143.2 million, for the project, the largest single highway construction contract to be offered to bidders in the history of PennDOT’s District 8.

Currently, PennDOT is in the process of reviewing J.D. Eckman’s proposal and is expected to award the contract within the next six to eight weeks.

PennDOT said it would like to see preparation work on the project start this fall. The work will first focus on adding new lanes in both directions on the outside of the existing lanes, adding one lane each way. After that stage is completed, contractors will then focus on rebuilding the existing lanes on the inside of I-83.

The expected date of completion is the end of 2021.
