Iconic Steel Submersible Built with Lukens Steel Added to Museum in Coatesville

The Guppy – an iconic steel submersible built with Lukens steel – is coming to The National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum in Coatesville, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Local News.

The two-person, electric-powered sub was constructed in 1970 by the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Chester. It has been on display at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia for years.

“We’d been in communication with them in the past, about our interest in the sub,” said James Ziegler, the museum’s executive director. “Just before Christmas, we got a phone call saying they’d like us to have it.”

The Guppy was originally sent to Alaska to explore the continental shelf. While there, it completed a 1,100-foot unmanned dive and a 625-foot manned dive, and also helped to inspect oil rigs and assist divers when making repairs.

To help fund the $4,000 cost of the move, the museum has started a crowdsourcing page.

“We’re asking for the public’s help,” said Ziegler.
