Pennhurst State School and Hospital

State Senator Andy Dinniman’s office will host a traveling exhibit on the story of Pennhurst State School and Hospital on the evening of Friday, Oct. 6. The exhibit, organized by the Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance, tells the story of Pennhurst State School and Hospital, which opened in 1906 and houses those with mental and physical disabilities before closing in 1987 by federal court order.

The exhibit – which tells the story of Pennhurst in a three-part series detailing life at Pennhurst, the fall of Pennhurst, and the legacy of Pennhurst – will be set up outside Dinniman’s West Chester District Office, located at One North Church Street during West Chester’s First Friday event on Oct. 6.

Family Promise of Southern Chester County

The week of Oct. 22-29 has been designated Family Promise Week to help spread community awareness of the crisis of family homelessness in Southern Chester County.

FPSCC has planned a special party on Oct. 25 from 7-9 PM at its Resource Center, located at 1156 West Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square, to honor volunteers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education reported that 422 school-age children and their families experienced homelessness in Southern Chester County at some point during the 2015-2016 school year. FPSCC opened its doors in November 2015 and has served 31 families with 117 family members (77 children and 40 adults).

Oxford Memorial Park

Oxford may be a small borough, but it has a big heart. The entire community has worked together to bring a state-of-the-art inclusive playground to Oxford Memorial Park, located at 100 Lancaster Pike.

This new playground, unveiled last Saturday, is founded in the principles of inclusion and makes a fundamental statement about how Oxford values meaningful play experiences for children of all abilities. The seven principles of Inclusive Playground Design are: be fair; be included; be smart; be independent; be safe; be active; be comfortable.
