Faced with the daunting task of healing the state’s $3 billion budget deficit, Gov. Tom Wolf has proposed to put Chester County’s horse hospital out to pasture.

The governor’s budget removes all $30 million of state funding to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, which includes the 700-acre Kennett Square campus known as the New Bolton Center, according to a Daily Local News report by Fran Maye.

School officials, however, are hoping that the New Bolton Center cuts won’t be approved by the Legislature.

“The students, faculty, and staff of the University of Pennsylvania recognize the severity of the commonwealth’s budget challenges,” said PennVet Director of Communications Ashley Burke.

“This is an opportunity to expand awareness of the vet school’s historic partnership with the commonwealth, which was designed to protect the health and safety of the citizens of Pennsylvania and its largest industry, agriculture.”

The state funding helps support emergency services, advanced research, and training of aspiring veterinarians.
