Scott Klaverkamp, an urgent care clinician in Berwyn, has found the strength to overcome addiction thanks to the fitness program CrossFit, writes Natalie Hope McDonald for PhillyVoice.
Klaverkamp, a Media resident, had his wake-up call after years of “self-medication” following his diagnosis of PTSD from serving four years of active duty as a navy corpsman a decade ago.
After being introduced to Phoenix Multisport, a free fitness program designed specifically for addicts, he was encouraged to face his demons. According to Klaverkamp, this was probably one of the best – but also the hardest – things he’s ever had to do.
The program was first launched eight years ago by recovering addict Scott Strode. Strode has been sober for 19 years, and has become a leading advocate for achieving sobriety through fitness.
Strode’s latest beta program within the Phoenix Multisport franchise, Human Strength, is now available at Fearless Athletics, a gym in South Philadelphia that specializes in CrossFit.
“I always wanted to bring the program home to Philly,” said Strode. “There is almost no free, long-term recovery support.”
